There’s just something about winter in Cape Town. Rain against the window pane whilst sitting in front of a fireplace in one of the world’s best restaurants. Warm company, award-winning South African red wine and the kind of winter food specials that make this luxury so easily accessible.
Yes, winter is what the epicureans live for in Cape Town. Summer is for the glitzy crowd who like to shake their platinum blonde hair on Clifton beach. I do like Clifton beach and running around in sandals (there’s a Jimmy Choo shop at the Waterfront these days) and dresses while enjoying the sun on my skin. Yet some of us just love good food and wine even more than the beach.
Winter is the time of year when you can have the creamy tempura prawn sushi at Willoughby’s, the pork belly at Waterkloof restaurant and that Lindt fondant at Brio, not to mention the Bruce Robertson picnic baskets at Warwick or one of the fabulous crispy base pizzas at Posticinos. All that besides the bubbly and the wine and the many lovely home dinners amongst good friends who love to entertain as much as I do.
Yet there are always those 26 degree Celsius winter days when us Capetonians are coaxed out of our shells. That’s when The Grand Beach offers the perfect setting. While South African law forbids drinking on public beaches, The Grand is technically not situated on a beach. They simply created a man made beach at this idyllic sea side location, added some crystal chandeliers and Parisian medicine cabinets to the warehouse next to it – and soon fashionistas, celebrities and millionaires from near and far found their new favourite spot. They serve decent champagne and do good pizza too.
Me, well I’ve been detoxing after all that indulgence. It’s time for the winter layers to disappear earlier this year. Reason being that I’m catching the end of summer 2010 and some good friends in Europe. It’s about time for a little trip. It will be the first one since coming back home to Cape Town. Bring on the sun!

I'd been looking for information about a restaurant on the beach in Cape Town and went to the Grand after reading this. Grateful for the tip, it was awesome. We had the seafood platter and some Delair Sauvignon Blanc. Its expensive but we loved it!
